Mike Moustakas rejoined the Royals on Monday afternoon after missing the weekend series in Detroit because of a family emergency.

He returned from the bereavement list. To make room on the 40-man roster, the club optioned backup infielder Orlando Calixte to the minors.

Moustakas has asked for privacy regarding the situation. He sought to thank the fans who reached to him and his family over the weekend.

“If you can just tell them all thank you for their well wishes,” Moustakas said. “And everything, all the stuff they sent, the tweets and stuff they sent, my family really appreciates all that stuff.”

A parade of Royals visited Moustakas’ locker offering hugs and handshakes on Monday. The team was happy to have him back. Manager Ned Yost slotted Moustakas into his customary place in the lineup, batting second and playing third base.

“It’s going to be good for him to get back here,” Yost said. “To get back with his buddies, back to playing baseball.”
