On his final approach to first base, Royals catcher Erik Kratz was injured.

It happened on Sunday, in the ninth inning of the Royals’ loss to the Tigers. Kratz hit a grounder to third and on his final step felt a pain in his foot as he stretched out for the bag.

Kratz was put on the disabled list with plantar fasciitis of the left foot.

Francisco Peña Jr., was recalled from Class AAA Omaha, to fill the roster spot.

“(Kratz) can catch, he can throw, but he’s a light jog at best,” Royals manager Ned Yost said.

Peña was hitting .239 with one home run in 18 games at Omaha. He made his major league debut with the Royals last May and appeared in one game.

Peña, the son of former Royals manager Tony Peña, had a second stint with the Royals in September but didn’t appear in a game during that stretch.

“I’m not happy to hear about Kratz, but I’m happy to be here,” Pena said.
