Lorenzo Cain, Edinson Volquez ready to play as appeals process begins

Lorenzo Cain does not feel his conduct on Thursday merited a suspension, but as the Royals reconvened on Sunday morning at U.S. Cellular Field, he declined to rage against the two-game ban levied against him by Major League Baseball.

"You go out there and fight, and do things, you’ve got to pay the consequences," Cain said. "We’ll see what happens."

Cain was one of four Royals to receive suspensions. All four will appeal. So Edinson Volquez, despite a five-game ban, was slated to start the day’s second game with Chicago. Both Yordano Ventura (seven games) and Kelvin Herrera (two games) were also available to manager Ned Yost.

Yost is prepared to play with a shortened roster in the coming days. The team has both Chris Young and Yohan Pino available if they need to use spot starters.

Yost did clarify one point of confusion from the suspensions. What, exactly, did Herrera do to merit his punishment?

"I think he was throwing some punches, or something," Yost said.

Herrera was soon removed from the fray, and could be seen with former teammate Emilio Bonifacio on the outskirts of the skirmish. But before then, Herrera was said to be pushing his way into the fight.
