Joe Blanton has agreed to remain with the Royals organization and will accept an assignment to Class AAA Omaha, manager Ned Yost said on Tuesday.

Blanton, a 34-year-old right hander, did not pitch in the majors in 2014. He has been a veteran of 10 big-league seasons, but went 2-14 with a 6.04 ERA for the Angels in 2013. Blanton had an April 1 opt-out but elected not to explore free agency.

“With the makeup now of our rotation, major-league teams always over the course of the year need somewhere between five and eight starters, generally,” Yost said. “We just feel really comfortable with the way that he’s throwing the ball as depth down there.

“A guy that could come up here and give us a veteran presence and pitch a veteran game.”

Blanton posted a 2.79 ERA in 9 2/3 Cactus League innings this spring.
