Jandel Gustave, the Rule 5 selection who showed impressive velocity but scant control at Royals camp, has been claimed off outright waivers by San Diego.

The move trims the 40-man roster down to 39 players. There are 36 players left in Kansas City’s camp.

Gustave issued three walks in six appearances for the Royals this spring. The club acquired him in a trade with Boston in December. Gustave was initially a member of the Astros organization. For the Royals to retain control of Gustave past this season, he would need to spend the entire season on the 25-man roster.

There was little chance for Gustave to make the club. The bullpen is already stocked. Six spots appear locked up. The final two candidates for the last position are right-hander Louis Coleman and southpaw Brian Flynn. Both Luke Hochevar and Ryan Madson are expected to begin the season as Class AAA Omaha.
