Chris Young continues to build arm strength as he prepares for a new role as a long reliever with the Royals. Young threw four innings in a minor-league game on Wednesday afternoon. Then he added another simulated inning to his workload.

Facing a group of Class AAA Mariners, Young gave up two runs on five hits. He walked two. He struck out one.

Manager Ned Yost visited the back fields to watch Young work.

“He looked good,” Yost said.

The Royals want Young to be capable of throwing five innings when the season begins. He has never worked in relief before in his career.
