One complicating factor in Franklin Morales recent struggles on the mound: he has had a nasty throat infection, manager Ned Yost said.

The club considered scratching Morales from his outing on Saturday. Morales insisted on pitching. He gave up three runs, including a two-run homer to White Sox prospect Courtney Hawkins. Hawkins later smashed a walkoff homer off rookie Brandon Finnegan in the ninth.

Morales strung together six scoreless innings in his first four appearances this spring. In his last two, he gave up four runs. His Cactus League ERA now is 4.50. He still possesses a solid chance to make the club, especially considering Finengans continuing struggles.

Yost indicated Morales had gotten through the worst of his throat issue. He would not miss any time.

“He’s fine,” Yost said. “He’s on the back side of it. It was just a really bad sore throat, achy.”
