Chris Young will make his first start as a Royal in Friday’s game against San Diego.

His appearance coincides with Jeremy Guthrie’s turn in the rotation. Guthrie will pitch in a minor-league game earlier that day. The Royals host the Padres later that night.

Manager Ned Yost expects Young to stretch out to a five-inning length before the club breaks camp. Young gave up a solo homer in a two-inning stint on Monday, but otherwise looked solid. He will work as a long reliever in the team’s bullpen.

Edinson Volquez will start on Wednesday. Jason Vargas starts on Thursday.
