Josh Willingham intended to test his sore intercostal muscle on Tuesday afternoon by swinging a bat for the first time since the weekend. Royals manager Ned Yost hoped Willingham would return to action.

Instead, Willingham is not in the lineup. Billy Butler is back starting at designated hitter. The good news: Willingham was on the field to take early batting practice with his teammates.
