Tim Collins will receive a second opinion on the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow on Wednesday from renowned orthopedic surgeon James Andrews. Andrews will examine Collins in Florida.
The Royals have yet to decide a course of action for Collins, but they are bracing for the possibility that he will need season-ending Tommy John surgery.
An MRI over the weekend revealed damage to the ligament. Manager Ned Yost has not yet commented on the extent of the damage.
Kansas City owes Collins $1.4.75 million for 2015. The team opted to tender him a contract, rather than cut ties with him after his troubling performance for much of last season.
