Greetings from the first day of Cactus League action for the Royals. Here is the lineup as they face the Rangers at Surprise Stadium:

1. Alcides Escobar, SS

2. Jarrod Dyson, LF

3. Lorenzo Cain, CF

4. Eric Hosmer, 1B

5. Kendrys Morales, DH

6. Alex Rios, RF

7. Mike Moustakas, 3B

8. Erik Kratz, C

9. Christian Colon, 2B

The uncertainty about Alex Gordon makes this question moot, but the construction of this lineup is interesting. Manager Ned Yost batted aside questions about the probability of Gordon batting second.

“You guys want to open your Christmas presents in July,” Yost said. “Have some patience.”

Even so, he listed Gordon, Cain, Hosmer and Rios as his four candidates to hit in that spot. Each would be an upgrade over Omar Infante, who received 428 plate appearances in that spot, even as he stumbled to one of his least productive offensive seasons in the majors.
