Ryan Madson to face hitters in Royals intersquad game — if weather permits

The forecast for Monday is not pretty, with rain slated to land on the Royals complex. But the club will try to squeeze in another intersquad game, anyway.

For the home team, Jason Vargas, Chris Dwyer and Joe Paterson are all scheduled to pitch. The other squad will see Ryan Madson, Michael Mariot and Miguel Almonte on the mound.

The main event should focus on Madson. He has not pitched in the major leagues since 2011, due to complications from Tommy John surgery. The Royals took a low-priced gamble on him this winter, with the hopes he would be fully healthy. Madson sat out all of 2014 but pitching coach Dave Eiland remarked earlier this spring he was pleased with his first few glances of Madson.

A better look should emerge on Monday. The Royals still need at least two more pitchers for their bullpen. The leading candidates are Tim Collins and Louis Coleman.
