Sean Manaea, one of the best pitching prospects in Kansas City’s farm system, was held out of Friday’s workout due to a minor abdominal issue.
Manaea indicated the discomfort was minimal, and the team’s training staff had told him it was not a long-term concern. The Royals would like to avoid a serious intercostal or oblique injury, which can often require a month of rest.
Manaea added about 30 pounds during the offseason. He lived at an apartment near the complex here and dedicated himself to his conditioning.
A first-round pick in 2013, Manaea experienced a slow start last season. But he changed gears in the second half and finished with a 1.45 ERA after July.
