With pitchers and catchers reporting to camp on Thursday, the Royals added one more arm to the mix, signing left-hander Franklin Morales to a minor-league contract.
Morales, 29, spent most of last season as an unsuccessful starter in Colorado. He went 6-9 with a 5.37 ERA. Before that, he operated primarily as a reliever during stints with the Rockies and Red Sox.
The Royals could use bullpen depth. There is a segment of the front office that would prefer to use rookie southpaw Brandon Finnegan as a starter in the minors. That places some pressure to perform onto Tim Collins, who spent most of 2014 in the minors.
