The selection of marijuana products now available in Kansas City for anyone 21 and over is vast, and the prices vary.

Most dispensaries are offering marijuana flower at prices ranging from $20, all the way to $80 per eighth of an ounce.

If you are trying to figure out where to pick up from, there are plenty of choices. The Kansas City area is home to more than 40 dispensaries, and there are more than 200 dispensaries statewide.

When looking at prices, keep in mind there are a few reasons why marijuana flower is priced differently, according to Illicit Gardens spokesperson David Craig. Marijuana prices vary depending on the type of facility it’s produced in, how potent the flower is, how much flower the plant yields and how rare the strain is.

Craig added that legal marijuana also goes through strict product control, which can also contribute to the overall cost of the weed. Cultivators have to test the products for bacteria, pesticides, heavy metal and more.

“It’s a higher level of testing than most produce in the grocery store,” Craig said.

Although there are lots of products available, marijuana flower is a good starting point to get a sense of prices and is one of the more popular products available. According to Craig, 50% of legal marijuana sales nationwide are for cannabis flower.

“Raw flower products are kind of the standard,” Craig said.

He said that edibles are typically cheaper, and products like certain vapes and live resin are more expensive.

Most dispensaries in Kansas City sell marijuana flower by the eighth, meaning one eighth of an ounce, or 3.5 grams. Fewer dispensaries sell marijuana flower by the gram.

In most cases, customers can pick up weed flower by the eighth, fourth or half of an ounce. Customers can also pick up by the ounce. Based on Missouri’s new laws, customers can only buy a maximum of three ounces of marijuana flower in a single transaction.

How do taxes affect the price of legal weed?

All marijuana products will be subject to normal local sales taxes, including normal city, county and state sales taxes. There is also an additional 6% statewide tax on recreational marijuana products.

For example in Kansas City, the normal local city, county and state sales taxes come to 10.85%. So with the additional 6% state marijuana tax, a regular consumer buying recreational weed will pay nearly 17% in sales taxes.

In April, municipalities will vote on whether to add an additional 3% tax onto recreational marijuana sales. Cities like Belton, Grandview, Kansas City, Kearney, Liberty, Raymore, Raytown, Riverside, Smithville and more will all be asking voters to decide on whether to add that additional tax.

If approved in Kansas City, for example, the sales taxes on recreational marijuana will go up to nearly 20%.
