Tornado watch issued, severe storms expected amid KC heat: Live updates
The National Weather Service has placed several Kansas City metro counties under a tornado watch in preparation for severe storms, which could move into the area as early as Wednesday afternoon.
The watch, which is in effect until 9 p.m., includes Johnson, Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties in Kansas, and Clay, Platte, Jackson, Lafayette and Ray counties in Missouri.
Storms may start early in the afternoon and continue through the remainder of the evening into early Thursday, bringing with them threats of damaging winds, large hail, tornadoes, heavy downpours and flooding.
Flash flood warning issued in north Missouri counties
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning in Daviess, Grundy, Harrison, Livingston, DeKalb and Gentry counties until 9 p.m.
According to the warning, the weather service’s radar indicated thunderstorms in the area produced between 0.5 and 2.5 inches of rain. Forecasters believe an additional 2 inches of rain could fall.
“Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly,” the weather service said.
Cities impacted by the flash flood warning include Trenton, Jamesport, Gilman City, Pattonsburg, Spickard, Coffey, Jameson, Mcfall, Tindall, Brimson and Santa Rosa.
Tornado touches down near Jamesport
Weather spotters with the National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched down near Jamesport around 4:35 p.m.
The tornado, located 10 miles northeast of Gallatin, was spotted moving east at 30 mph, the weather service said.
A tornado watch was issued for northeast Daviess and central Grundy counties, including the cities of Trenton, Jamesport, Gilman City, until 5:15 p.m.
Radar indicates rotation near Daviess, DeKalb counties
The National Weather Service placed Daviess and DeKalb counties under a tornado warning until 5:15 p.m.
The weather service’s radar indicated rotation near Pattonsburg at 4:34 p.m., according to the tornado warning. A tornado and golf-ball sized hail may be possible.
Cities impacted by the warning include Gallatin, Gilman City, Pattonsburg, Coffey, Jameson, Weatherby and Santa Rosa.
Another tornado observed in north-central Missouri
The National Weather Service reported another tornado in north-central Missouri, near I-35 and the Iowa border.
A weather spotter confirmed a tornado near Pattonsburg in Daviess County, off Interstate 35, at 4:05 p.m. The rotation was moving east at 40 miles per hour.
Cities in the path include Coffey and McFall.
Tornado warning issued after one observed in north-central Missouri
The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for parts of Sullivan, Mercer and Putnam counties in north-central Missouri after a tornado was reported on the ground.
The weather service said that at 3:39, tornado producing storms were located along a line extending from 8 miles east of Mercer to Princeton, moving east at 25 mph.
Cities in the path of the storms included Princeton, Mercer, Newtown, Lucerne, Powersville, and South Lineville.
“A tornado is on the ground,” the weather service said in the warning. “TAKE COVER NOW! Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.”
The weather service also urged people to avoid windows, and if outdoors, in a mobile home or in a vehicle to seek the closest substantial shelter and to protect themselves from flying debris.
Tornado warning issued for parts of northwestern, north-central Missouri
The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for western Daviess County and northeastern DeKalb County, north and northeast of the Kansas City metro.
The warning, which is in effect until 4:15 p.m., was issued after radar indicated that there was rotation in a severe thunderstorm that was located near Maysville, moving east at 45 mph.
The communities impacted by the thunderstorm included Gallatin, Maysville, Pattonsburg, Winston, Altamont, Coffey, Jameson, Weatherby, Amity, Fairport, and Santa Rosa. The thunderstorm was also affecting parts of Interstate 35 in Missouri between mile markers 62 and 80.
The main threats from the storm are a tornado and ping pong ball-sized hail.
Severe thunderstorm warning issued in Missouri counties just outside metro
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for three Missouri counties just outside the Kansas City metro.
Southern Gentry, southeast Andrew and DeKalb counties were placed under a severe thunderstorm warning until 4 p.m., according to the weather service.
Forecasters located a severe storm over Union Star, near Savannah, moving northeast at 45 mph, the warning said.
The storm could bring 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail, according to the weather service.
“Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding and trees,” the weather service said.
Cities impacted by the severe thunderstorm warning include Maysville, King City, Union Star, Cosby, Weatherby, Mcfall, Amity, Fairport, Ford City, Helena and Santa Rosa.
