Kansas Citians commuting to work Friday may want to pack a rain jacket or umbrella as widespread showers impact the area.

Light rain, showers and occasional lightning continue to stream across the Kansas City area from the south and southeast to the northwest, according to meteorologists at the National Weather Service.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will make for a soggy day, but severe weather is not expected.

Rainy conditions are possible throughout the day Friday. By afternoon, rain should be less widespread in the region, the forecast shows.

“Expect a dreary, moist day across much of the (forecast area) with temperatures struggling to do much more than the mid-70s in areas that see the most persistent light rain and showers,” the weather service said in a Friday morning forecast discussion.

Weekend rain

Renewed showers and storm activity is possible going into the weekend, the forecast shows.

After Friday’s rainfall totals — which are predicted to be between a tenth and quarter of an inch — the area can expect another quarter of an inch Saturday, the weather service predicts.

While the weather service is tracking for potential severe storm activity Saturday night, models are showing a storm system weakening as it reaches the metro in those overnight hours.

Saturday’s high temperature is expected to be near 82 degrees.

Then Sunday, the weather service is tracking the potential for rain chances and storms to clear out of the area.

With clouds clearing out, temps could climb by Sunday and Monday, when the highs may peak near 90 degrees, the forecast shows.
