Rain returns to Kansas City. What’s the Memorial Day weekend forecast?

A few spotty showers may pop up in Kansas City Thursday morning, but a wetter stretch moves on Thursday evening and continues into Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

It will be a gray day in the metro as skies are expected to be mostly cloudy, with the weather staying cooler than normal. Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-60s, about 10 degrees below the average of 77 degrees typical for this time of year.

The chance for rain in the morning is on the low end, 20-40% along the Missouri and Kansas border with lower probabilities off to the east.

Winds from the south to southwest are expected to increase throughout the day, helping guide showers out of northern Oklahoma and southern Kansas into the area, the weather service said. A weather disturbance is expected to move into the area Thursday evening.

“This could set the stage for an extended period of rainfall beginning late Thursday and lasting through the early half of Friday,” the weather service said.

The chance of rain grows to 40-80% Thursday evening through Friday morning. Expected rainfall amounts have trended downward, now narrowing in on widespread accumulations of .25 to .5 inches of rain, with higher amounts possible in some locations. This downward trend has also eased, but not eliminated, concerns about flooding.

The risk of excessive rain has also been downgraded to a “marginal risk” mainly for areas south of Interstate 670 and along and west of Interstate 49 in eastern Kansas and western Missouri. No severe weather is anticipated with the storms, but there could be rumbles of thunder.

Rain should taper Friday off as the system moves out. Temperatures will be around 70 degrees.

The chance of rain over the Memorial Day holiday weekend is also on a downward trend and remains low, the weather service said. The greatest chance for showers and thunderstorms occurs Saturday afternoon, continuing overnight into Sunday, mainly south of Interstate 70.

Warmer weather is expected over the weekend, with temperatures in the mid-70s to low 80s. Skies will be partly sunny on Saturday and mostly sunny on Sunday and the Memorial Day holiday.

The weather pattern stays active next week with rain chances possibly returning mid- to late week. Temperatures should run in the mid-80s for much of the week.
