Thousands without power after powerful thunderstorms sweep through Kansas City

More than 11,000 people were waking up without power Tuesday morning after powerful thunderstorms swept through the Kansas City Metro area with damaging winds and torrential rains.

Evergy was reporting shortly after 6 a.m. that around 10,000 of its customers in the metro were without power, according to its power outages map. The utility said estimated restoration times were unavailable due to the storm activity. Delayed restoration times were expected.

The hardest hit county was Jackson County, affecting 5,247 customers. Meanwhile, 2,736 customers in Johnson County and 1,468 customers in Clay County did not have power.

Other outages in the metro affected 506 customers in Platte County, 80 customers in Leavenworth County, 27 customers in Cass County and 23 in Wyandotte County.

The Kansas City, Kansas., Board of Public Utilities reported that 1,538 of its customers were without power. The eastern part of Kansas City, Kansas, had the largest number of outages.

In Independence Power & Light’s territory, 65 customers were without power.
