Rain returns to Kansas City; Here’s what to expect this weekend

Rain and maybe some thunderstorms return to the Kansas City area on Thursday, but unlike earlier in the week, any storms are expected to stay weak and non-severe, the National Weather Service said.

Scattered showers are expected mainly in the afternoon as cloud cover steadily increases through the afternoon as the weather disturbance moves through, the weather service said. Some areas could hear thunder, but no severe weather is expected.

Rainfall amounts range from a few hundredths of an inch, with parts of north and northeast Missouri possibly seeing a little over .10 of an inch.

Drier air is expected to move in overnight Thursday. There is a small chance of sprinkles on Friday, but the rain may evaporate before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga. Any rainfall that does reach the ground is expected to be minimal.

So far this month, Kansas City has had 7.50 inches of rain, making it the fourth-wettest April on record. The wettest was April 1944, when 10.57 inches fell, followed by April 1999 (8.43 inches) and April 1947 (7.76 inches).

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-60s on Thursday and Friday, which is a few degrees cooler than the average of 70 degrees that is typical for the end of April and beginning of May. Overnight temperatures are expected to dip into the mid- to upper 30s.

The cooler weather is expected to spill over into the weekend, with temperatures reaching a high of 65 degrees on Saturday. Warmer temperatures return Sunday, climbing to near 80 degrees in the metro under sunny skies.

Warmer temperatures are expected at the start of the workweek, with temperatures in the upper 70s to lower 80s through the midweek. Small weather systems could bring on-and-off chances for rain showers and thunderstorms. By the end of the week, temperatures are expected to return closer to normal.

Scattered rain showers and maybe a few isolated thunderstorms are in the forecast Thursday for the Kansas City metro, according to the National Weather Service. Unlike earlier in the week, these storms are not expected to be severe.
