Update: Thunderstorms with damaging winds and penny-sized hail in the Kansas City area Sunday

An updated severe thunderstorm warning was released by the National Weather Service on Sunday at 5:42 p.m. in effect until 6:15 p.m. The warning is for Jackson, Bates, Cass, Henry and Johnson counties.

The storms are foreseen to bring wind gusts of up to 60 mph and penny-sized hail (0.75 inches).

"At 5:40 p.m., severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Pleasant Hill to near East Lynne to 9 miles east of Adrian to Rich Hill, moving east at 40 mph," according to the NWS. "Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees."

Locations impacted by the warning include Lee's Summit, Raymore, Harrisonville, Pleasant Hill, Greenwood, Peculiar, Butler, Holden, Adrian, Garden City, Rich Hill, Archie, Lake Winnebago, Lone Jack, Urich, Creighton, Hume, East Lynne, Kingsville and Baldwin Park. This includes Interstate 49 between mile markers 118 and 168.

According to the NWS, "A Tornado Watch remains in effect until 11 p.m. for west central Missouri. For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building."

This warning is in effect until 6:15 p.m.

What to do as threat of lightning approaches?

Lightning hits the United States approximately 25 million times annually. The majority of these strikes happen during the summer, causing around 20 fatalities each year, according to the NWS. The likelihood of lightning increases as a thunderstorm gets closer and reaches its highest point when the storm is directly overhead. This risk decreases as the storm moves away.

Here are tips on how to stay safe during a thunderstorm:

  • To lower the risk of lightning strikes, when going outdoors, develop a plan to reach a safer spot.
  • If the sky becomes threatening and thunder can be heard, find a safe place to shelter.
  • Once indoors, avoid touching corded phones, electrical equipment, plumbing, and windows and doors.
  • Wait 30 minutes after the last lightning or thunder before going back outside.

If finding indoor shelter is not an option:

  • Stay away from open fields, hill summits, or ridge tops.
  • Keep a distance from tall, solitary trees or other elevated structures. When in a forest, stay in proximity to shorter tree groupings.
  • If you are in a group, spread out to avoid the current traveling between group members.
  • If you are camping in an open area, set up camp in a valley, ravine, or other low area. Remember, a tent offers no protection from lighting.
  • Do not approach water, wet objects, or metal items. Although water and metal do not attract lightning, they conduct electricity effectively.

What steps to follow when driving in the rain?

  • Turn on your headlights - Even when it's light outside, using headlights can improve visibility and alert other drivers to your presence.
  • On the road - Drive in the middle lanes and stay on high ground. Rainwater tends to stockpile on the edges of roads.
  • Avoid puddles - Driving into puddles or low rainwater areas can lead to vehicles hydroplaning or losing control.
  • Don't tail large vehicles closely - Trucks or buses can kick up a water spray that obstructs visibility.
  • Steer clear of flooded areas - When coming to a flooded road, turn around and head back. Flash flooding currents are strong and can sweep drivers off roadways. Driving through deep water can also affect a vehicle's mechanical and electrical systems.

What is hydroplaning?

Hydroplaning is the term for when a vehicle begins sliding uncontrollably on wet roads.

This happens when water in front of the tire builds up faster than the vehicle's weight can push water out of the way.   • Ease off the accelerator - Step off the gas to slow down the vehicle until the tires find traction.
