Howling winds hit Kansas City in late-season storm. Here’s where gusts were highest

A late-season winter storm came roaring through Kansas City, but this time it’s not the snow stealing the show, it’s the near-60-mph wind gusts that accompanied it, according to data from the National Weather Service.

The strongest gust was at New Century AirCenter in Johnson County, which reported a 58 mph gust. Meanwhile, Kansas City-Lee’s Summit Regional Airport in Jackson County saw a wind gust of 56 mph, while Kirksville in Adair County reached 53 mph.

Ten counties saw wind gusts of 50 mph or higher: Johnson County, Kansas; and Jackson, Adair, Buchanan, Randolph, Pettis, Andrew, Platte, Nodaway and Lafayette counties in Missouri.

Kansas City International Airport hit 51 mph, while the Downtown Airport saw gusts hit 47 mph, and Johnson County Executive Airport reached 48 mph.

The wind caused some damage in the area, including downed tree and wires near Taylor Drive and West 95th Street in Overland Park, a large uprooted oak tree near West 71st Street and Roe Avenue in Prairie Village and downed tree and wires near Beacon Avenue and East 103rd Street in south Kansas City.

There were other reports of downed trees and power lines and well as property damage in other parts of the metro.
