Kansas City’s springlike stretch is about to flip. Will snow crash the weekend?

Spring’s February visit to Kansas City is coming to an end, with just a couple more unusually warm days before cooler weather and a chance of light snow return this weekend.

Temperatures across the region will be in the mid-60s to low 70s, according to the National Weather Service. The metro is expected to see temperatures in the upper 60s, well above the average of 45 degrees for mid-February in Kansas City.

The unusually warm, dry, and breezy weather conditions will increase the risk of grass and brush fires in the Kansas City area, the National Weather Service said. North-central and northeast Missouri will be under a red flag warning from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, while the metro and the rest of the forecast area will be outside the warning, the weather service said.

So far this month, it ranks as the second-warmest February in Kansas City’s 138 years of weather records. The average temperature for the period through Feb. 17 is 44.1 degrees this year. The warmest was in 1954, with an average temperature of 45.2 degrees for the same period.

While winds will not be as strong as on Tuesday, west winds will blow around 10–20 mph, stronger in northern Missouri, with gusts up to about 30 mph.

The warm, dry, and breezy weather conditions will increase the risk of grass and brush fires, the weather service said.

For the short term, the danger of wildfires will be elevated across the region on Wednesday and Thursday, the weather service said.

North-central and northeast Missouri will be under a red flag warning from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, while the metro and the rest of the forecast area will be outside the warning, the weather service said.

The entire forecast area will face elevated fire danger, with the possibility of red flag conditions south of Interstate 70, the weather service said.

A red flag warning means weather conditions are ripe for wildfires to start and spread very quickly.

Cooler weather, snow chances in KC’s forecast

Temperatures are expected to return to near normal on Friday, climbing to the mid-40s.

A series of weather disturbances is expected to sweep through the area overnight Friday into Saturday, bringing a 30% to 40% chance of light snow, with any accumulations likely to be an inch or less.

Some forecast models, however, keep the Kansas City area dry, so this snow may not happen or could be very light, the weather service said.

Temperatures are expected to be in the low 40s on Saturday and around 39 degrees on Sunday. The cooler weather will spill over into next week, with temperatures in the upper 30s on Monday before climbing to the mid-50s on Tuesday.
