Snow squalls, heavy snow bursts may bring whiteout conditions in Kansas City area

Bursts of heavy snow showers and more intense snow squalls are expected to sweep across the Kansas City region Friday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service. The snow is forecast to spread from northwest to southeast across the region, mainly between 2 and 8 p.m., the weather service said in a special statement. “Heavy snow showers will reduce visibility to under one mile and will be accompanied by wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph,” the weather service said. During snow squalls, visibility might suddenly drop to near zero as whiteout conditions develop. The weather service provided the following safety tips for those who encounter a snow squall: Reduce your speed and turn on your headlights.

Consider avoiding or delaying travel until the snow squall passes your location.

If you must travel, use extra caution, as rapid changes in visibility and slick roads could lead to accidents.

If traveling on a highway, find the nearest exit or rest area and park safely away from traffic. Allow snow squalls to pass before resuming travel.
