Severe storms popping up around Kansas City. Strong winds, maybe tornado possible
A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for part of the Kansas City metro as scattered thunderstorms are popping up across the area, according to the National Weather Service.
The weather service issued a severe thunderstorm warning at about 3:45 p.m. for central Wyandotte County, southeastern Platte County and southwestern Clay County that remains in effect until 4:15 p.m.
A severe thunderstorm was located over Bonner Springs, moving at 50 mph to the northeast, the weather service said. Wind guts of 60 mph and nickel-sized hail were the main hazards.
“Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees,” as the possible impact from the storms.
The cities in the path of the storm include Gladstone, Bonner Springs, Parkville, Edwardsville, North Kansas City, Riverside, Weatherby Lake, Kansas City Kansas, Kansas City, Lake Waukomis, Avondale, Platte Woods, Oakview, Northmoor, Houston Lake, Oakwood Park, Oakwood, Oaks, Randolph, and Pomeroy.
As a precaution, the weather service urged people to remain alert for a possible tornado.
“Tornadoes can develop quickly from severe thunderstorms,” the weather service said. “If you spot a tornado, go at once into the basement or small central room in a sturdy structure.”
Warm, muggy air had moved into the region, leading to scattered thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front sweeping through, the weather service said in a social media post.
“Wind guts to 65 mph or possibly a brief tornado are possible through the evening hours,” the weather service said.
Earlier in the afternoon, the weather service issued a severe thunderstorm warnings for areas north of the metro, but those warnings have since expired.
Shortly before 4 p.m., the weather service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for eastern Buchanan County, northwestern Daviess County, western Clinton County, southeastern Gentry County, northeastern Platte County, southeastern Andrew County and DeKalb County.
The weather service said severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from southwest of Union Star to near Agency to west of Dearborn. They were moving at 50 mph.
Cities in the path of the storms include St. Joseph, Plattsburg, Gower, Maysville, Stewartsville, Agency, Trimble, Edgerton, Dearborn, Camden Point, Osborn, Pattonsburg, Clarksdale, Easton, Cosby, Weatherby, Ridgely, Mcfall, Amity, and Faucett.
The warning was in effect until 4:45 p.m.
