The workweek will get off to a chilly start in Kansas City, but warmer days are on the way before a storm system brings the chance of rain by mid-week, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures were in the low 20s shortly before 6 a.m. Monday at Kansas City International Airport. The wind made it feel much colder, with wind chills in the single digits.

Temperatures will warm into the mid-40s on Monday, more than 20 degrees warmer than Sunday and slightly above the average of 42 degrees for mid-December in the metro.

“That warming trend will continue into the middle of the week, with highs in the middle 50s for Tuesday and the middle to upper 50s for Wednesday,” the weather service said.

Rain in Kansas City’s forecast

A strong cold front will push through the area late Wednesday into early Thursday, bringing a chance of rain. Forecast models now show that the rain could fall farther west than originally expected, so most of the Kansas City area has at least a small chance of showers, the weather service said.

The cold front will also bring a drop in temperatures, with lows early Friday in the low teens to low 20s. Daytime temperatures are expected to be in the upper 40s on both Thursday and Friday.

“It’s possible to likely that high temperatures for Thursday across northern MO will be reached just after midnight with temperatures steady or falling through the day for much of the area,” the weather service said.

After the cold front passes, a warm-up is expected into the weekend, with temperatures climbing into the mid-50s on Saturday. Temperatures will be cooler on Sunday, reaching a high in the upper 40s.

The weather will likely stay dry this weekend, with no strong storms expected to move through the area or the middle of the country into early next week, the weather service said.
