Kansas City shivers as icy air moves in. How long will this frigid weather last?

Grab those winter jackets, Kansas City. Wind chills will be biting on Monday, but a big warm-up is coming by midweek.

“If you are heading out this morning or if you are sending the little ones off to the bus stop, be sure to bundle up as wind chills will be in the single digits and teens,” the National Weather Service said.

Temperatures were 21 degrees shortly before 6 a.m. Monday at Kansas City International Airport. The wind chill was 14 degrees.

The good news is that this will be “the coldest temperatures we will see all week,” the weather service said. However, with wind chills in the single digits and teens, outdoor conditions will be very uncomfortable for most.

Temperatures on Monday are expected to climb to only the upper 30s, with wind chills making it feel closer to freezing.

Winds will switch in the evening, coming out of the south and southwest, which will spark a warming trend.

“This will allow temperatures Tuesday morning to be warmer than this (Monday) morning,” the weather service said. “However, early morning lows for Tuesday will still be below freezing, staying in the 20s with the KC Metro in the low 30s.”

By the afternoon, the southerly winds will help temperatures climb back to around 60 degrees. The warm weather, coupled with low humidity, could result in slightly elevated wildfire concerns, mainly for areas south of Interstate 70, the weather service said.

The warm-up continues through the week, with temperatures reaching the mid-70s by Friday, which is well above Kansas City’s average temperature of 54 degrees for this time of year.

Heading into the weekend, temperatures are expected to be near 70 degrees. Chances for showers, however, arrive late on Saturday and persist into Sunday. The weather service indicated there is a possibility of isolated thunderstorms, but severe weather is not currently expected.
