Will looming showers dampen your weekend plans in Kansas City this weekend?

Frost is expected to blanket areas north of Kansas City in northern Missouri on Wednesday morning, but forecasters say the focus will soon shift to rounds of rain and potentially a few storms heading into the weekend and early next week.

Sunny and dry weather is expected across the metro on Wednesday, with afternoon temperatures climbing to around 67 degrees, which is a degree or two above average for this time of year.

Rain is expected to move in after midnight, with scattered to widespread showers possible throughout the day on Friday, the National Weather Service said. There will be more periods of dry weather than wet weather.

“It looks like most widespread activity will stay across the southern half of the forecast area, generally south of the Missouri River, with more scattered to isolated activity further northeast,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion.

“It’s actually very possible to likely that areas north of (U.S. 136), especially into north central and northeastern MO, see no precipitation with this system, at least Friday into Saturday.”

Off-and-on showers and unsettled weather are expected to linger throughout the weekend. The weather service said no strong or severe thunderstorms are expected.

“The point of emphasis here is it won’t be a continuous rain,” the weather service said. “But there will be multiple periods of scattered showers throughout the weekend.”

Between an inch and an inch and a half of rain is expected, most likely along and south of a line from Paola, Kansas, to Clinton, Missouri, with progressively lower amounts northward, the weather service said. Little to no rain is expected across far northern and northeastern Missouri.

Looking ahead to next week, another round of showers, possibly with a few thunderstorms, is expected to move through Monday afternoon and continue overnight into early Tuesday. Drier weather returns by the middle of next week.
