T-shirt or sweater? Or both? Changing seasons will keep Kansas City guessing
Fall’s temperature swings will keep Kansas Citians on their toes: T-shirt weather one day, sweater weather the next.
For Thursday, expect a pleasant fall day in the metro, with temperatures around the mid-70s, according to the National Weather Service. Although temperatures felt more like fall earlier this week, that is expected to change for the weekend.
“Temperatures are expected to warm up later this week and into the weekend, culminating in highs in the low to mid-80s by Sunday, about 10-15 degrees above normal for this time of year,” the weather service said. The metro’s temperatures are typically around 70 degrees in early October.
There are two chances of rain in the forecast, the first opportunity coming overnight Thursday into Friday morning, according to the weather service.
Rain chances increase after midnight and continue into Friday morning, with storms expected to be out of the area by midday, the weather service said. Not everyone will see rain, as the showers and storms will be isolated or scattered in nature.
The next chance for rain will be early next week, but it’s uncertain how much rain the metro will get because it depends on exactly how a weather front sets up. No severe weather is expected.
Folks should expect the overall weather pattern to keep switching between cooler and warmer days.
The reason for these temperature swings? Forecasters say disturbances in the upper-level winds and shifting pressure systems are causing both warm and cool air to move through the area, a common pattern during seasonal changes.
These fluctuations may increase the chances of rain, which could help alleviate the ongoing drought in the area.
