Rain moves out, heat movies in. When will Kansas City start to sizzle?
Dry skies are returning to Kansas City on Tuesday, but folks living north of the metro might not want to put away their umbrellas just yet — showers and a few rumbles of thunder could roll through.
“There will be a slight chance of precipitation across northern Missouri this afternoon; however, better chances will remain north of the area,” the National Weather Service said in its forecast discussion.
Despite the possibility of rain, most will stay dry.
After a brief cool down and spotty rain chances, forecasters are warning that much hotter and mainly dry weather is set to return as the week continues. With heat index values expected to climb into the triple digits by the weekend, people across the metro should prepare for a return to summer conditions.
Cloudy skies will keep temperatures slightly below average in the low to mid-80s. It may feel sticky and muggy at times.
But those mild days won’t last for long.
Blistering summer weather on KC’s horizon
A high pressure system over the southwestern United States on Wednesday will start to move eastward on Thursday, bringing a warming trend to the metro area.
“This will aid in highs rising into the mid-80s to near 90 on Thursday,” the weather service said.
By Friday, the heart and strongest part of the high pressure system will be over the area and linger through at least Saturday, the weather service said. This system will allow temperatures to reach into the upper 80s to mid-90s on Friday and Saturday.
Heat index values will soar as high as 105 degrees, which is close to levels that could trigger a heat advisory, the weather service said.
Sunday will be just as hot, with temperatures in the mid-90s and heat index values around 100 degrees.
Expect a hot and mostly dry weekend, with no clear answer yet on when the next round of showers might move in.
