Big downpours or light showers? Uncertainty clouds Kansas City’s forecast

Keep the rain gear close — showers and thunderstorms could dump buckets of rain across the Kansas City area on Monday, the National Weather Service said.

Heavy rainfall remains possible (Monday) morning and through the afternoon into the evening,” the weather service said.

Severe storms are not likely, but downpours could lead to localized flash flooding, the weather service said.

Forecast models are “really struggling with the progression” of the storm system, making it hard to pin down the exact timing and locations of the storms, the weather service said.

The main complex of thunderstorms will likely lose strength before it gets to western Missouri, though some leftover smaller storms may linger through the day, the weather service said.

Storms could restrengthen in the afternoon, with heavy downpours remaining possible.

Kansas City‘s rain chances were around 60% at 6 a.m., likely dropping to 20% by noon and then rebounding to 45% by 6 p.m.

Additional showers and thunderstorms are expected on Tuesday, with the chance of rain ranging between 30% and 50%.

Temperatures will be in the low to mid-80s on Monday and Tuesday.

Dryer, warmer weather in Kansas City’s forecast

“Things start to dry out by mid- to late week, along with warming temperatures heading into the weekend,” the weather service said. “Heat indices are once again pushing 100 degrees by the weekend.”

Temperatures will warm to the mid-80s on Wednesday, the upper 80s on Thursday and around 90 degrees on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Kansas City typically sees temperatures around 88 degrees this time of year.
