- Cold front arrival Sunday–Monday to trigger successive rounds of heavy rain and storms.
The Kansas City area faces a weekend double-whammy as blistering heat gives way to powerful storms that could bring flooding and severe weather, according to the National Weather Service.
Anyone with outdoor plans should monitor the weather closely over the next few days.
Dangerously hot and humid weather is expected on Friday, with temperatures soaring to the mid-90s and dew points, a way meteorologists measure how much moisture is in the air, in the low to mid-70s.
“This will result in heat indices ranging from 100-108 with a few spots flirting with 110 degrees,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion.
The weather service has issued a heat advisory for most of the Kansas City forecast area from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., warning that the dangerously hot weather may lead to heat illnesses.
“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the weather service said.
Forecast models hint that a few stray showers could develop in the afternoon just after peak heating, but rain is unlikely, with chances below 15%. Most of the area should stay dry, with any rain expected to be minimal.
Multiple rounds of thunderstorms in KC’s forecast
“Going into the weekend, the forecast becomes significantly more complex,” the weather service said.
A weather disturbance will cross the northern and central Plains overnight into Saturday morning, which could help trigger showers or thunderstorms in the region.
Storm chances for Saturday night are slight, below 25%, mainly north of the metro, with most of the area not expected to see significant rain.
Saturday could be just as hot and humid as Friday, but if storms or clouds stick around from overnight, temperatures might not be as extreme, the weather service said.
Storm risks increase overnight as stronger storms, some potentially severe, move into the area, the weather service said. Heavy rainfall will be possible, which could lead to flooding.
Forecasters are still uncertain about the exact timing and locations.
Additional waves of heavy rainfall possible
A cold front will gradually move into and through the area on Sunday and Monday, bringing additional rounds of storms, the weather service said. These storms are expected to be efficient rain producers.
“In areas with repeated rounds of storms, flooding will become a concern,” the weather service said. “ For now, high uncertainty still lies with exact amounts of rain, locations of heaviest rainfall, and storm evolution day-to-day.”
The National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center has issued four consecutive days of marginal risk for excessive rainfall for a good portion of the Kansas City area. For Sunday, the excessive rainfall outlook places areas north of Interstate 70 at a slight risk.
A few of the storms over the weekend could be severe, with damaging winds being the main threat.
Temperatures are expected to top out near 90 degrees on Sunday and 85 degrees on Monday. Kansas City typically sees temperatures of 88 degrees this time of year.
