  • Kansas City faces mid-90s heat and heat index above 100 through Saturday.
  • Scattered storms may develop on Wednesday, but rainfall chances remain slim.
  • Weekend may bring repeated storms and possible flooding from heavier rain.

Sweltering heat, a hint of rain and a stormy weekend could all be in the cards for the Kansas City area this week, according to the National Weather Service.

Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms could pop up in the Kansas City area on Wednesday, but it’s likely the metro will remain dry, according to the weather service.

The chances for the storms remain slim, around 30%, and any storms that do develop are expected to be brief with no severe weather, the weather service said. Heavy rains are not likely.

Weather forecasters say there is some uncertainty due to storms developing farther east earlier Wednesday in Iowa. It remains a wait-and-see situation for the metro because it was unclear how strong and widespread the rain would become, the weather service said.

Heat index values to soar above 100 degrees

Hot and muggy weather is expected to stick around through Saturday, with Friday expected to be the hottest day, according to the weather service.

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-90s in the metro, with heat index values above 100 degrees — possibly as high as 105 on Friday.

The hottest period will be late Friday morning through the afternoon, the weather service said. High humidity, with dew points in the 70s, and occasional gusty south winds up to 25 mph, will add to the discomfort.

Kansas City temperatures are typically around 89 degrees this time of year, making this heat wave several degrees above average. The weather service said a heat advisory may be needed for Friday, depending on the latest forecasts.

Heavy rains possible in Kansas City’s forecast

Don’t put away the umbrellas just yet. The weekend’s weather is expected to be more unsettled, with multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms possible each day beginning Saturday and continuing into early next week.

Pockets of heavy rainfall and localized flooding will be possible.

“Being this far out, there is uncertainty with the exact amounts and locations for the heaviest rainfall,” the weather service said.

Temperatures are expected to range from the upper 80s to the mid-90s, but how hot it gets could depend on how many clouds and storms roll through.
