Kansas City gets a taste of autumn in July. Will the break from the heat last long?
AI-generated summary reviewed by our newsroom.
- Kansas City temperatures dip to upper 70s, offering brief autumn preview.
- Dew points drop into 50s Thursday night, bringing drier, more comfortable air.
- Warming trend begins Monday, with highs nearing 90 by midweek next week.
Fall-like weather will move into Kansas City on Thursday, but the break from the summer heat won’t last for long, according to the National Weather Service.
“The final day of July will give us a taste of early autumn with highs (temperatures) ranging from the mid 70s to around 80 degrees,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion. “While humidity will be quite a bit lower than previous days, dew points in the mid-60s to near 70 degrees will likely hang on at least through the afternoon hours.”
In the metro, temperatures are expected to be around 78 degrees, falling to the low 60s overnight. Kansas City’s temperatures are typically around 89 degrees during the day and 68 degrees overnight this time of year.
A reinforcing shot of drier air will push into the area, sending dew point values tumbling into the 50s overnight Thursday, the weather service said.
In the summer months, dew points between 50 and 60 degrees are generally considered comfortable. When they rise above 60 degrees, the air becomes sticky and muggy. As dew points exceed 65 degrees, the heat becomes oppressive due to the moisture in the air.
Pleasant, dry weather in Kansas City’s weekend forecast
The cooler weather is expected to continue into the weekend, as temperatures reach around 78 degrees on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Skies will be partly to mostly sunny each day.
Overnight temperatures in the metro will be in the lower 60s.
The weather is expected to be generally dry, with a slight chance for rain on Sunday and Monday, the weather service said.
Heat of summer returns to the metro
Warmer weather will return on Monday, although it will remain below average, according to the weather service.
Temperatures are expected to climb into the low 80s on Monday. Dew point values will also increase a few degrees in the afternoon.
“The warming trend continues/increases as we head into Tuesday and Wednesday,” the weather service said. “Highs are currently forecast to reach the mid to upper 80s on Tuesday and the upper 80s to lower 90s on Wednesday.”
Dew point values will also be back into the lower 70s by Wednesday afternoon.
Besides a few periods of a slight chance for rain, less than 20%, dry weather is expected, according to the weather service.
