Storms will bring a break from dangerous heat in KC with fall-like temperatures
Multiple rounds of storms will bring a break from the dangerously hot and humid weather in Kansas City, but not before a couple more days of heat, according to the National Weather Service.
Temperatures will remain quite hot on Tuesday, climbing to around 96 degrees in the afternoon, the weather service said. The heat index value will be close to 110 degrees.
A heat advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. for parts of east-central and northeast Kansas and central, north-central, northeast, northwest and west-central Missouri. The hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses, the weather service advised.
“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the weather service said in the advisory.
Cold front moves into Kansas City area
Overnight, the first of multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms is expected to move southeast from Nebraska toward northwest Missouri by early Wednesday, according to the weather service.
Severe weather is possible, with strong to damaging winds being the primary threat, the weather service said. There is uncertainty in how far south and east the severe weather reaches.
This storm activity will push a cold front into the area as well, which will bring periods of off-and-on storms through Thursday morning, the weather service said.
Heavy rainfall is possible Tuesday night and Wednesday, with localized flash flooding possible. How the storms play out overnight Tuesday will affect storm chances on Wednesday, the weather service said.
“Most of the region remains highlighted within a slight risk for excessive rainfall from 7 a.m. Wed. through 7 a.m. Thurs, with a marginal risk for severe wind gusts for this same time period,” the weather service said.
Because the cold front will be slow-moving, areas south of the Interstate 70 corridor will remain under a heat advisory through 7 p.m. Wednesday.
In the metro, temperatures are expected to be around 91 degrees, with the heat index climbing to 100 degrees.
Much cooler weather in Kansas City’s forecast
Any lingering showers and storms should exit the region to the south by noon on Thursday, the weather service said.
Cooler and drier air will filter in behind the cold front, more like what is seen in September, the weather service said.
Temperatures in the metro are expected to be around 77 degrees on Thursday. Kansas City’s temperatures are typically around 89 degrees this time of year. Elsewhere, temperatures are expected to range from the mid-70s across northern Missouri to around 80 degrees toward the Ozarks.
The cooler weather will continue into the weekend, with temperatures around 76 degrees on Friday and Saturday and near 80 on Sunday.
There is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms returning on Monday.
