Thousands without power in Kansas City after overnight storm and heavy rain
Thousands are without power after storms swept through the Kansas City metro, breaking records and causing flooding. Both Jackson and Johnson counties were hit hard.
Nearly 3,000 people in the Kansas City area were without power as of 2:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the Evergy outage map. Over 600 people in Jackson County, and more than 1,700 in Johnson County were also without power.
In a statement Thursday afternoon, Lindsey Temaat, communications manager at Evergy said that crews have restored power to 95% of customers.
“Crews will continue to work until all customers are restored, which is expected overnight tonight,” Temaat said in a statement.
Record-breaking storm leads to flooding, water rescues
The overnight storms, which drenched the area from Wednesday into Thursday, broke a record— more the doubling Kansas City’s previous daily record for rainfall at 2.78 inches, beating the old record of 1.35 inches set in 1968.
The record rainfall led to flash flooding in some areas.
The Kansas City Fire Department reported it performed 23 water rescues which began shortly after rainfall started Wednesday evening, according to spokesperson Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins.
