Shield of rain creates wet commute in Kansas City. More rain expected in metro
A shield of steady, widespread rain is trailing behind a line of strong thunderstorms that swept through the Kansas City area early Tuesday.
“Widespread showers have been ongoing,” the weather service said on X, formerly Twitter. “Hydroplaning risk is greatly increased this morning.”
The weakening thunderstorms have pushed southeast of the metro into central Missouri, but the rain showers will continue through most of the morning before clearing out, the weather service said. While severe weather is not expected, an isolated thunderstorm is possible.
Temperatures will climb to around 88 degrees, which is the average for this time of year. Heat index values will be in the low 90s, and dew point values will be in the low 70s.
Thunderstorms might develop this afternoon south and east of the Kansas City area, according to the weather service. If the storms develop, wind gusts of 60 mph or stronger are possible.
Any storms that develop should concentrate rain south of Interstate 70, with most of the storms pushing southeastward toward the Ozarks into the evening, the weather service said.
More rain in Kansas City’s forecast
The weather should be mostly dry on Wednesday, except for a few pop-up storms, the weather service said.
Temperatures will be around 90 degrees, with heat index values in the low 90s. Dew point values are expected to dip into the mid-60s in the afternoon.
Generally, when the dew point rises above 65 degrees in the summer months, people begin to feel that the air is sticky or muggy.
There will be a better chance for scattered thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and evening, some of which might be stronger or more organized than earlier in the week, the weather service said.
Temperatures will be around 89 degrees.
A stronger weather system is expected to move through the Kansas City area on Friday, bringing the chance for widespread showers and thunderstorms headed into the weekend, the weather service said. Some strong to severe storms will be possible.
There is a possibility of heavy rain, which could lead to flooding concerns.
Temperatures are expected to climb to around 92 degrees on Friday, with heat index values in the upper 90s.
The weather is expected to be noticeably cooler over the weekend, with temperatures in the low 80s on Saturday and mid-80s on Sunday. Dew point values will also be lower, making it feel more comfortable.
