Don’t be surprised if pop-up showers and thunderstorms interrupt what will be a hot and muggy Friday in the Kansas City area, according to the National Weather Service.

There is a chance for some isolated to scattered thunderstorms to develop in the afternoon and evening, the weather service said.

“The strongest storms could produce near-severe conditions with the primary threat being strong to damaging wind gusts,” the weather service said.

The rain is most likely to fall in southern Missouri, particularly in the Ozarks region, and may also occur on the southern edges of the Kansas City area. Later in the afternoon and evening, storms could also develop along and north of Interstate 70.

“Some of the strongest storms could produce brief downpours,” the weather service said. “Additional rainfall could aggravate areas that have already received significant rainfall.”

The risk of flooding, however, is limited due to the storms being fast-moving and not widespread, according to the weather service.

Temperatures are expected to climb into the low 90s in the afternoon, with heat index values rising to the upper 90s. Dew point values in the low 70s will make the heat feel oppressive due to a high level of moisture in the air.

Weekend showers in Kansas City’s forecast

There will be additional chances, 25-35%, for showers and thunderstorms over the weekend in Kansas City, the weather service said.

Areas south of I-70 appear most likely to experience the storms, but there is still uncertainty in the forecast regarding where the storms might track.

The hot and humid weather is expected to persist through the weekend, with temperatures in the low 90s and heat index values ranging from the 90s to the low 100s on Saturday and Sunday. Dew point values are expected to range from the low to mid-70s.

A cold front is expected to push through the area late Sunday and early Monday, bringing another chance for thunderstorms. The chance of severe weather is low.

Break in the heat arrives next week

The cold front is also expected to bring a welcomed change in temperatures as cooler and drier conditions are expected behind the front.

The first half of the week will feature more seasonal weather, with temperatures expected to be around 87 degrees on Monday, 88 degrees on Tuesday, and 89 degrees on Wednesday.

Typically, Kansas City’s temperatures are around 87 degrees this time of year.
