Rains in Kansas City’s weekend forecast. Here’s when severe weather is possible

Showers and maybe a few rumbles of thunder will be possible Friday, kicking off the first of multiple chances of rain for the weekend, the National Weather Service said.

Storms were moving across southern Missouri into the Ozarks early Friday, the weather service said.

“A decent amount of cloud cover should linger through much of the day today, and with us being on the north side of the boundary, another day of slightly below normal temperatures is likely with highs in the mid to upper 70s,” the weather service said.

Temperatures in the metro are expected to climb to around 78 degrees, slightly below the average of 82 degrees for this time of year.

Rain lingers in Kansas City’s forecast

“Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible again on Saturday and Sunday, with a few strong to severe storms possible,” the weather service said.

The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has placed a portion of the Kansas City region under a marginal risk of severe weather, which is the first tier on a five-point scale. Areas south of a line from Butler to Boonville are at a slightly higher risk.

Severe weather is possible on Saturday morning into the afternoon. Damaging winds are the primary threat, but marginally severe hail and a brief tornado might be possible.

The risk of strong to severe thunderstorms returns Sunday afternoon ahead of an approaching cold front, the weather service said. Damaging wind gusts and marginally severe hail are the main risks.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed the area south of a line from Kansas City to Kirksville under a marginal risk of severe weather. There is a higher risk of severe storms south of the Kansas City forecast area into the Ozarks.

Temperatures are expected to be around 79 degrees on Saturday and 83 degrees on Sunday.

Showers and thunderstorms will be possible this weekend in Kansas City, with severe weather possible on Saturday and Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. While damaging winds are the primary hazard, there is a possibility of severe hail and a brief tornado on Saturday.
