Springtime sweater weather? Late-May cool streak nears Kansas City record
If you thought it’s been chilly lately in Kansas City, you weren’t wrong.
Over the past 10 days, Kansas City’s weather has seemed rather cold-ish for spring. In fact, it’s been one of the coolest late May stretches in its 137-years of weather records, the National Weather Service in Kansas City said social media.
This year, the 10-day period from May 20 to 29 ranked seventh lowest, with the average temperature of 60.6 degrees.
The coolest was in 1924, with the average temperature for that period being 58.7 degrees. The last time the metro has seen that period this chilly was in 1997, when the average temperature was 59.5 degrees. That year tied for the fourth coolest for that period.
Here’s a look at the rankings for coolest Kansas City temperatures for that time period in late May:
- 58.7 degrees in 1924
- 58.9 degrees in 1992
- 59.1 degrees in 1947
- 59.5 degrees in 1968 and 1997
- 60.4 degrees in 1892
- 606. degrees in 2025
The cool weather is coming to an end Friday as temperatures are expected to climb to around 78 degrees, a couple of degrees below what is typical for this time of year.
Summer-like weather is expected this weekend as temperatures are predicted to soar into the mid- to upper 80s, the weather service said in its forecast discussion.
“KC has yet to have a 90-degree day this year,” the weather service said on X. “On average, the first 90-degree day happens on 5/27. We are already late and there isn’t a 90-degree day in the 7-day forecast.”
