  • Severe weather possible next week as low-pressure system develops the across western U.S.

Sunny and warmer weather is expected in the Kansas City metro on Wednesday, but another wave of rain is close behind, according to the National Weather Service.

The metro is likely to see “drier conditions than we have seen the last several days,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion. “Expect to see some breaks in cloud cover to develop, with better surface heating than we have seen earlier this week.”

Temperatures are expected to climb to around 71 degrees, still cooler than the average of 79 degrees that is typical for this time of year in the metro.

There is a chance that an isolated storm or shower may develop later in the day, with the best chances for rain being east of Interstate 35 across northern Missouri, according to the weather service.

Rain returns to Kansas City Wednesday night, with the heaviest rain expected south of Interstate 70, according to the National Weather Service. Warmer, drier weather is expected by the weekend.

Overnight storms in forecast for Kansas City

“Rain returns to the region” Wednesday night, the weather service said. “Heaviest rainfall is expected south of Interstate 70.”

No severe weather is expected as the storms sweep through the area.

Between .25 and .50 of an inch of rain is possible south of I-70 through Thursday morning.

There is a chance for late afternoon showers and thunderstorms, the weather service said. Temperatures will be around 71 degrees.

Warmer, drier weekend expected in metro

More tranquil weather returns as a nice warm-up is headed into the area for the weekend.

Temperatures on Friday are expected to be near normal, at 78 degrees. Even warmer weather is expected, with temperatures climbing into the mid-80s on Saturday and Sunday.

A disturbance in the atmosphere moving along the Canadian Border is expected to turn right and build into the central U.S., the weather service said.

This could lead to showers and storms, but the forecast models disagree on where the storms might form. One model has the storms forming across western Nebraska into western Kansas, while another has the storms building in Minnesota and eastern Missouri, the weather service said.

“Given we are in the window of possibilities, there is a chance of storms Saturday night, though wind shear, moisture and instability look to be limited with this feature,” the weather service said.

Stormy weather likely next week

A stormy weather pattern is expected Tuesday through Friday next week, the weather service said. A strong area of low pressure is likely to develop across the western United States, sending periodic waves of storms through the Kansas City region.

“This looks to be the next potential for severe weather in the region,” the weather service said.

The warmer weather is expected to continue into the next week, with temperatures near 87 degrees on Monday and 85 on Tuesday.
