Scattered rain showers will linger through at least mid-morning for most of the Kansas City area on Thursday, but drier and warmer days are ahead, according to the National Weather Service.

Some areas around Butler, Clinton, Sedalia, and Boonville in Missouri may see showers hang around through the afternoon and into the evening, the weather service said in its forecast discussion.

Isolated thunderstorms are possible, but no severe weather is expected. The weather service said that areas south of U.S. 50 will have the best chances of rain.

Skies will gradually clear, becoming mostly sunny, allowing temperatures to climb to around 73 degrees, which is normal for this time of year in Kansas City.

Dry, warm weather in Kansas City’s forecast

According to the weather service, once the rain stops, the metro and surrounding areas will begin what is expected to be a long stretch of drier and warmer weather.

Skies will be sunny on Friday, with temperatures in the mid-70s.

Warmer temperatures are expected over the weekend, climbing to 78 on Saturday and near 80 degrees on Mother’s Day. Winds are expected to be light.

Summer-like temperatures looming

The weather will begin to feel more like summer next week in the metro, as temperatures are expected to climb to levels more typically seen during June, according to the weather service.

Temperatures are expected to reach 79 degrees on Monday, 83 degrees on Tuesday, and 89 degrees on Wednesday.

If temperatures reach 90 degrees or above,

Kansas City typically doesn’t see its first 90-degree day until May 27. The earliest was on March 31, 1907, when temperatures climbed to 91 degrees. The latest was on July 15, 1904, when temperatures reached 92.

In the last 10 years, the metro has only seen its first 90-degree day in May three times — May 5, 2023, May 9, 2022, and May 13, 2018.

The warmer temperatures will be a change from what has been a relatively mild spring.

The weather service noted at the beginning of the month that there has been a lack of 80-degree days this year.

“You can’t really say we haven’t had a Spring,” the weather service said on X, formerly Twitter. “Through the end of April, KC has only one 80-degree day (84 on 4/13). Only 9 years on KC’s 137-year record has had less 80-degree days (zero) through April.”

The last time the metro had no 80-degree days through April was 1993.

“The next meaningful chances of rain (beyond Thursday) are not until late next week into next weekend,” the weather service said.
