Heavy rains, storms in Kansas City’s forecast. Severe weather risk growing

Sporadic showers and thunderstorms are expected Thursday in the Kansas City area with the chance for excessive rain overnight, according to the National Weather Service.

Lingering showers, mostly over northern Missouri, were expected to quickly die out after sunrise Thursday. The metro will be briefly dry as the skies become partly sunny.

Temperatures are expected to reach 80 degrees in the afternoon, well above the metro’s average temperature of 68 degrees for this date.

“Additional storms capable of producing locally heavy rainfall will be possible late day into Friday morning,” the weather service said.

While severe weather is not expected, the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center has placed eastern Kansas and western Missouri in a slight risk for excessive rainfall.

According to the weather service, most of the heavier storm activity is expected along and north of U.S. 36 in northern Missouri.

“A potential for minimal flooding exists with multiple rounds of precip,” the weather service said. “Storm totals for the northwestern corner of Missouri through Friday afternoon get as high as an inch and a half. Storm totals significantly diminish to around half an inch along I-35.”

The weather service said that light, intermittent showers are expected through late afternoon Friday as the storm system exits the area to the east.

Temperatures will be about 10 degrees cooler, returning closer to normal on Friday.

Drier weather in Kansas City’s weekend forecast

“Drier conditions are expected this coming weekend, but additional rounds of severe weather are likely Monday night into Tuesday,” the weather service said.

Temperatures are expected to range in the 60s to 70s across the region on Saturday and Sunday. There are chances for rain Saturday night and again on Sunday.

A new weather system is expected to bring more rain and thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday. Some of these storms might be strong or severe, with all modes of severe weather possible.

The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has upgraded the severe weather risk from 15% to 30% for Monday.

The weather will stay active with several chances for showers and storms throughout the week as multiple weather disturbances move through the region.
