Stormy week expected in Kansas City. When will the rain fall?

After a warm, dry start to the week, the Kansas City area will see multiple chances for showers and storms into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Cloudy skies will gradually clear, allowing temperatures to climb to around 71 degrees on Monday. That is slightly above the average of 67 degrees typically seen this time of year in the metro.

Excessive rainfall on Sunday has caused flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone areas in central and west-central Missouri.

The weather service has issued a flood warning for Pettis, Saline, Henry, Johnson, and Lafayette counties in Missouri. Although no additional rainfall is expected, flooding will continue to impact the area.

Some areas that will experience flooding include Warrensburg, Knob Noster, Concordia, Holden, Sweet Springs, Whiteman Air Force Base, La Monte, Leeton, Creighton, Chilhowee, Houstonia, Lake Lafayette, Centerview, Emma, Blairstown, Fayetteville, Post Oak, Pittsville and Quick City.

“Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads,” the weather service advised. “Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.”

Sunny skies return on Tuesday, with temperatures climbing to near 80 degrees.

Multiple rounds of rain in Kansas City’s forecast

The weather service said that the dry weather may end as a cold front is expected to approach the Kansas City area Tuesday afternoon and evening.

The chance for showers and thunderstorms is 50-70%, with some storms north of U.S. 36 across northern Missouri being strong to severe, the weather service said. The main hazard from the storms will be large hail.

More widespread rain is expected on Wednesday and Thursday as a series of weather systems move across the region, the weather service said. Southerly winds will usher in moisture, but not as much as Sunday.

The threat of severe weather “doesn’t look to be too significant at this time,” the weather service said.

Temperatures will linger in the mid-70s on Wednesday and Thursday.

A wet weekend is likely in the metro

Rain could linger into Friday morning before drier conditions return. Temperatures will be slightly cooler, dropping back to around 69 degrees.

The dry conditions are not likely to last long, the weather service said.

While Saturday will begin sunny, temperatures will remain near 68 degrees. Rain showers return overnight, with a chance of precipitation around 40%.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely Sunday, and temperatures will be in the low 70s. The chance of precipitation is 60%.
