A soggy Easter weekend is forecast for Kansas City. How much will it rain?

A rainy holiday weekend is ahead for Kansas City, beginning with showers and a slight risk of strong storms Friday night, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for the region due to the potential for large hail and damaging winds from storms on Friday. Those severe storms are mainly south of the Kansas City metro, weather models show.

But persistent rain throughout the next three days could total up to two to four inches by Easter Sunday, creating a risk for river flooding, the hazardous weather outlook says.

The chance for rain Friday is mainly after 4 p.m. around Kansas City. A cold front moving through the area is bringing cooler temperatures and cloud cover, weather models show. The high temperature on Friday is expected to be around 73 degrees.

Meteorologists predict Friday’s storms will develop mainly south of a line from Ottawa, Kansas to Macon, Missouri.

These storms will be capable of producing hail the size of ping pong balls and wind gusts up to 60 mph, the forecast reads.

More showers, storms over Easter weekend in KC

Overnight Friday, there’s another chance for showers and thunderstorms between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m.

A wet pattern is likely to develop in the region, with showers and non-severe thunderstorms returning to Kansas City Saturday. Rain is possible in the early morning on Saturday and a thunderstorm is possible after 1 p.m., the forecast shows.

Heavier rain is expected on Easter Sunday, mainly between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. This will likely lead to rising river levels and the potential for river flooding, meteorologists said in a Friday forecast discussion.

A flood watch is in effect for eastern Kansas into central and southern Missouri through Sunday.

By early next week, meteorologists expect a warming trend with temperatures rising to seasonal norms, the weather service said.
