Possible rain, warmer weather ahead. Will KC see its first 80-degree day?

Several rounds of rain are expected to move through the Kansas City area, but not everyone will see showers, according to the National Weather Service.

The first wave is expected Wednesday morning across northern Missouri, with a second wave on Wednesday night. There is a slight chance of rain — 15-20% — as the isolated showers move through the region.

In the metro, the chance of rain remains around 5% throughout the day, rising to 10% around 6 p.m. Rain chances climb to 20% after midnight.

The weather service said the third wave will come Thursday and primarily affect areas east of U.S. 65 in central Missouri.

“This will also be the best chance to see a few thunderstorms,” the weather service said. Isolated to scattered showers, along with isolated thunderstorms, will be possible.

Warmer temperatures in Kansas City’s forecast

After the rain, the Kansas City area will enter a quiet, dry period as temperatures warm into the weekend.

“Remember yesterday when we were talking about a freeze?” the weather service asked on social media. “Well, then it makes perfect sense that we should be talking about 80-degree temperatures today! Why, you ask?? Because, Missouri, that’s why!!”

The metro will see temperatures warm into the mid-70s on Wednesday before dipping to 70 degrees on Thursday and 63 degrees on Friday, the coolest day of the forecast period.

Temperatures will then rebound into the lower 70s on Saturday and the mid-80s on Sunday.

“Kansas City has yet to have an 80-degree day this year,” the weather service said. “On average, the first 80-degree day happens on 4/4, so we are a little late, but we will most likely have our first one on Sunday.”

The weather service said the latest first 80-degree day for Kansas City was May 21, 1904.

Typically, Kansas City’s temperature is 64 degrees this time of year.

A cold front is expected to move through the area Sunday night, bringing the chance for light rain showers overnight into Monday.

“This will cool temperatures a bit for Monday, but highs will still remain above normal in the upper 60s to mid-70s,” the weather service said.
