Kansas City forecast: Damaging freeze, rain, then a warm-up
A damaging freeze that could harm sensitive plants is expected to kick off the work week in Kansas City, according to the National Weather Service.
A pair of freeze warnings is in effect for portions of east-central and northeast Kansas, as well as central, north-central, northwest, and west-central Missouri, including the Kansas City metro area.
The first warning runs until 9 a.m. Monday, with the second one is in effect from midnight to 9 a.m. Tuesday.
“Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” the weather service said in its warning. “Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.”
The cold weather made for a chilly commute on Monday morning. Temperatures at Kansas City International Airport dipped to 36 degrees shortly before 6 a.m. The wind chill made it feel more like 30 degrees.
Despite a cold front pushing through the area on Monday with northerly winds, temperatures are expected to rise into the 50s to lower 60s. The temperature in Kansas City is expected to reach around 57 degrees, just a few degrees below the average of 63 degrees for this date.
It will be even colder on Tuesday morning, with temperatures expected to fall to or below freezing in the metro area. Overnight temps are typically around 41 degrees this time of year.
Temperatures will be around average Tuesday and then in the upper 60s and 70s for the rest of the workweek.
Rain, storms possible in Kansas City’s forecast
There will be a couple of chances for rain Tuesday night through Thursday.
The first chance will come Tuesday night into Wednesday as a weather system moves through the area.
“Moisture associated with this system is meager and the better chance for precipitation appear to be north of the area,” the weather service said. The chance of rain remains low, at around 20-30%.
The second round of showers and possibly a few thunderstorms is expected to occur Wednesday night into Thursday. No hazardous weather is expected.
Weekend warm-up likely in metro
A warming trend with dry weather is expected for the weekend.
Temperatures will remain in the mid-60s on Friday but are expected to soar into the low 70s on Saturday and then near 80 degrees on Sunday.
Skies are expected to be mostly sunny to sunny all three days.
