Rainy weekend forecast: Cool weather in Kansas City

A cold rain is expected to move into the Kansas City area Friday morning kicking off what will be a damp and cool weekend in the metro, according to the National Weather Service.

Waves of scattered showers are expected to sweep into the area, with the metro’s chance of rain increasing from 30% during the morning rush hour to around 85% by noon, according to the weather service.

“Widespread showers and thunderstorms (south of I-70) are expected today,” the weather service said. “Precipitation chances are not as high Saturday and Sunday, but areas along and south of I-70 are most likely to see showers.”

Thunderstorm activity is more likely Friday afternoon and evening, but no severe weather is expected.

“A brief period of dry weather may be possible late Saturday afternoon into Sunday evening,” the weather service said. However, another wave of light rain is expected to move through the area overnight into Sunday morning.

Rain chances are expected to end by late Sunday afternoon and evening.

Cool weather in Kansas City’s forecast

Cooler-than-normal weather is also expected to move into the area. Temperatures will climb only into the low 50s on Friday, well below the typical 62 degrees for this time of year in Kansas City.

“With cloudy and rainy conditions expected through the weekend, temperatures will remain on the cool side, with highs on Saturday again in the upper 40s to lower 50s and upper 40s to mid-50s on Sunday,” the national weather service said in its forecast discussion.

With temperatures falling to the mid-30s, rain could mix with snow Saturday night into Sunday morning.

The cool weather is expected to linger in the metro during the first part of next week.

Morning temperatures “will hover near freezing in the low to mid-30s, so tender vegetation may need to be protected,” the weather service said. Tuesday morning will be the coldest.

Kansas City’s last spring frost is around April 10th at the Wheeler Downtown Airport, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

Temperatures are expected to climb to around 60 degrees on Monday and Tuesday afternoons.

Warmer weather is expected to flow into the area mid-week, allowing temperatures to climb into the mid-60s and lower 70s on Wednesday and the upper 60s to mid-70s on Thursday.

The next chance for rain after the weekend will arrive on Tuesday night and continue into Wednesday.
