Mid-week storms possible for Kansas City. Will rain dampen the Royals’ home opener?
The Kansas City area may get a minor reprieve from the gusty weather it has experienced so far this March, according to the National Weather Service.
“It won’t be calm (Tuesday), with 10-20 mph winds are still likely today and lighter winds expected Wednesday,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion. However, gusts of 35 mph are not expected, unlike the winds in recent days.
Above-normal temperatures are expected to continue through Saturday. It’s expected to be 68 degrees on Tuesday and 66 degrees on Wednesday. After that, temperatures will remain in the mid- to upper 70s for the rest of the week, with Thursday being the hottest day, as temperatures are expected to flirt with near 80 degrees.
Kansas City’s temperatures are typically in the upper 50s this time of year.
Will there be rain for the Royals-Guardians game?
A strong wind from the southwest will usher moisture into the area late Wednesday, increasing the chance of storms, according to the weather service. There is a 20-30% chance of showers and thunderstorms overnight into Thursday.
Some of the storms could be strong to marginally severe, with hail being the main hazard with the stronger storms, the weather service said.
“Shower and thunderstorm chances continue through the morning on Thursday but should diminish by the afternoon,” the weather service said.
There is a chance for showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m., the weather service said
Showers and thunderstorms could linger in the area by the time of the Kansas City Royals’ Thursday home opener against the Cleveland Guardians at Kauffman Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Active weather pattern returns with rain over the weekend
The weather is expected to be mainly dry on Friday, but the weekend will bring increased chances of rain and thunderstorms, particularly Saturday night into Sunday.
There is a 15% chance for potential severe storms, mainly on Sunday, the weather service said. The possibility of severe weather depends on how much instability can build into the area. The severe weather will likely be east of the immediate metro area.
“The best potential for severe weather in our area looks to be the eastern half of the forecast area during this time frame,” the weather service said. “Though a slowing down of features would bring this risk westward.”
