Light snow is slowly tapering off, but the wind will be the main concern Wednesday across Kansas City.

Snow is expected to gradually end Wednesday morning in the metro, allowing visibility to improve, according to the National Weather Service.

“The main concern through the entire day will be the high winds with wind gusts expected to range between 50 to 65 mph through this afternoon/evening,” the weather service said.

In the Kansas City area, wind gusts were expected to be above 50 mph until noon and then gradually fall to around 38 mph by 5 p.m. Winds will likely calm down as the evening progresses.

A high wind warning will remain in effect for the Kansas City area and portions of east-central and northeast Kansas and north-central and west-central Missouri until 6 p.m.

“Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines,” the weather service said. “Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.

Blizzard warning canceled for KC metro

The blizzard warning for the metro expired at 6 a.m., but a winter weather advisory replaced it. It was set to expire at 9 a.m., but the weather service extended the advisory until noon for the KC metro and surrounding areas.

Drivers should plan for slippery road conditions, the weather service said.

Temperatures are expected to climb to the upper 30s, well below Kansas City’s average temperature of 51 degrees for this time of year. Overnight temperatures will tumble into the low to mid-20s.

Warmer weather expected for the weekend

The weather service said that temperatures will rebound but remain below average on Thursday, climbing to upper 40s.

There is a chance for light precipitation overnight Thursday into Friday morning, primarily north of Interstate 70.

“This should fall as rain for most locations, although a wintry mix or even some wet snow could be possible for areas closer to the Iowa border,” the weather service said. Little to no snow is expected to accumulate.

Temperatures will be in the low 50s on Friday.

A warming trend begins Saturday, with temperatures climbing to around 53 degrees. The weather service said the warm-up intensifies with temps reaching nearly 60 degrees on Sunday, almost 70 on Monday and the low 70s on Tuesday.

Dry weather is likely from Friday afternoon into early next week.
